It’s not an end in itself

Just like the title, if I wanna say:" A human being is the end in itself." But I know human beings are not "something". So what shall I use in this sentence? ( I think "himself" or "herself" sounds like a sexist. Any other words?)

What's a human being? You can consider it as a kind of description of human beings by a mean of philosophy. To be a human being is the aim of a human being. Actually, I just wanna know a word to describe oneself without the sexist pronoun( e.g. himself ,herself ).
