It's my way or the highway.

Hi. I just came across this idiom, but I don't quite understand what it means.

Could someone please explain it, please?

Thank you.

Hello, Anon! Is it from a song? I've never encountered it, maybe it means "it's a way meant for me alone, or it's a way many people use" ?

I believe it is a command: "Do it my way or take a hike."

I came across this in movie "Goodfellas"

It means, do it my way or take a highway.. that is if you don't want to listen to me, you can leave, I don't need you.

It means like listen to me or go away.

Because the word highway has connotations with going away somewhere or moving

For instance a boss could say this to his employee

Hi. It means: you either do it "my way" or you can leave, get lost or scram.

"Ït's my way or the highway" is one of my favorite English expressions.

I will give you my interpretation of what it means. I believe ít can either be used humorously to mock someone who is autocratic, controlling, demanding, etc. or it is stated in anger by a person with these qualities.

If used in anger, I believe it means "Do what I say or hit the road (start walking away
