It’s been a long time coming

By the sentence what doest it mean? and when to use?
Does it mean something has been in existence for a long period of time?
Any explanation would be really appreciated.

It means that something has taken a long time to arrive, happen, etc. Often it's said of desirable things that you've had to wait for: "Today I finally got my pay rise. " "At last I'm getting some recognition for my work.
