it's as if

In the English Language, is it common and correct grammatically to use 'it's as if' like in the sentences below?

If I don't eat bread with my main course, it's s if I hadn't eaten at all. I'm still starving if I don't eat bread.

Your mom gave you $150 for your birthday. You bought clothes with the money. Basically it's as if your mother had bought you the clothes.
