It's about the usage of "spare" as a verb

Hello. Please notice to this sentence:

Treatment directed at the control of local inflammation immediately after injury may spare the zone of stasis

Can "spare" in this sentence be defined as "to refrain from harming or injuring"? And so, does it means that treatment may prevent worsening the situation of the zone of stasis?

I really do appreciate your concern.
