A route is taking you from one place to another, but an itinerary is more of a schedule of times and places you will be.
If you ask the person for their itinerary, they would give you their flight number, the time it leaves their home and the time it arrives in the new location, what hotel they will stay at, how long they will stay and when they will leave (with flight departure times).
