How do italics work with tense? As in, if I want to jump back and forth between present and past, which part do I italicize?
My paragraphs go: present, past, present, past, present
Does it make sense to do present, past, present, past, present - only italicizing the present paragraphs the first two times? From the third present on, it's the rest of a lengthy story.
Thanks

Is this some sort of flashback device? I should think the past tense would be italicized. But I don't think there's any established pattern for it.

Ah my mistake, I should have said it goes past to past perfect. Does this change your answer at all? But yes, it is a flashback. I'm not sure about any rules either, but I suppose it would depend on the individual story.
