Italics
Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me. I am just wondering if any of these 6 words would have to be italicized in a manuscript. 1) ad hoc 2) en route 3) café 4) pate (French version) 5) naïve 6) au revoir Thanks for any help

The test is whether they are English words taken whole from a foreign language or foreign words being used for the nonce in English. (The English words do not take diacritics.) In general, if the word is familiar and is being used as an English word, use roman type, even if it is strictly foreign. For instance, I would not italicize "schadenfreud', but I would weltschmertz.
