It wasn't until

Hi,

It wasn't until I saw her face that I realised how big the problem was.

Can I use "after" instead of "it wasn't until"? If so, does the meaning change a lot?

Thanks.

Anonymous Can I use "after" instead of "it wasn't until"? Be careful in phrasing your question. You have created an ungrammatical sentence, and you'll have to remove "that".

Thank you CalifJim.

Here is another quote:

It was not until 1972 that the war finally came to an end.

Can I use as soon as here?

No. Seeing someone takes almost no time at all. Realization is a sudden thing. On the other hand, bringing a war to an end is a longer process. "as soon as" is much more appropriate with more sudden events and shorter periods of time.
