It wasn't until ........

It wasn't until I met him at the conference that I had known that he was a well-known writer.

Is this sentence grammatically wrong?
If so, how do I correct it, without changing ''I had known'' ?

That's possible, but 'discovered', 'learnt', 'found out', etc are more likely, in my opinion.
