It was worth visiting this place

After I visit an ancient place, can I say "It was worth visiting this place" to indicate that my visiting this place made me happy? If no, what can I say? If yes, I am confused because I think this sentence also means "It was worth visiting this place but it is not now (maybe because it has been destroyed after my visit and there is nothing to see now)", am I right, are both meanings possible and should we understand the meaning from the context?

After visiting it, you are more likely to refer to it as "that place", not "this place".
