It was worse than useless

Please, could you explain this phrase: "It was worse than useless"? What does it really mean? Is it something like: it was indeed useless, or more than useless?
Thanks indeed for help!

Hi Andrea: The expression is an exaggeration, usually said in disgust. It means that instead of something helping a situation, it did just the opposite - it made things worse.
