It was upsetting whenever I found/find myself lying about my life.

Hi all

I am wondering which tense I should use when I am recounting something that happened in the past, yet the cause of the upsetting is still true. That is, I still find it upsetting whenever I find myself lying about my life.

It was upsetting whenever I found myself lying about my life.
It was upsetting whenever I find myself lying about my life.

Thank you.

Best wishes

This is OK but it does not convey the fact that you still find it upsetting. (To be very fussy, "It was ... whenever I ..." is in my opinion not the greatest stylistic combination ever written, but I think most people would find the sentence acceptable.)

I think you can use the present tense to make a general statement: "It is upsetting whenever I find myself lying about my life." The word "whenever" encompasses past, present and future.
