It was supposed to be his day off but he volunteered for

Hi

Is this sentence natural -- I mean the contradiction of the yellow words?

(It is about a pilot).

It was supposed to be his day off but he volunteered for this flight to make extra money. His wife was expecting their second child.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks, Mr. Wordy!

...but can I request more light on:

Volunteer = get money

None of my dictionaries shows that one can in fact get paid after volunteer work.

Although in many walks of life "volunteers" are unpaid, you can nevertheless "volunteer" for something that is part of your paid work, meaning that you choose to do it rather than being forced to do it. In your example we know that he is a professional pilot, and we realise that "volunteered" refers to his working when he could be on holiday, not to his working without pay.
