• it was successful vs. I was successful

Hi! I read the following script in a TOEIC book:

“30. You won the main prize in the quiz, didn’t you?

(A) Yes, it was quite successful.

(B) No, I had to cancel it.

(C) Yes, I was really surprised.

(Answer: C)” ((Step up TOEIC Bridge Intermediate, p. 314))

I agree with the above book that C is the only correct answer.

Let me explain the reason that A can NOT be the correct answer:

- You say “it was successful” when the event (in this case, the quiz show) makes much money, attracts many people, and so on.

- You say “I was successful” when you did well in the event (in this case, the quiz show) and finally got the result you intended.

What do you think of my explanation? Am I right?

Thanks in advance.

I agree with your general explanation, but actually the original sentence is quite odd. 'Main prize' is not natural English, and quizzes, which are short, casual affairs, are seldom or never accompanied by prizes.
