It Was Necessary to Try One’s Best Not To?

OK, thanks. I was suggested, though, that expressions like it was necessary to try one's best to.../he might have tried his best to... are OK in the following senses: the gravest mistakes were made.../due to complete inexperience... That is, not as ironic ones, but as expressing plain criticism or sarcasm.
