It Was Necessary to Try One’s Best Not To?

Hi. Could you suggest whether there is any idiom or at least a correct expression to convey the following meaning: it was necessary to try one's best not to achieve a goal or to achieve something ridiculous. The implied sense is ironic. For example, when a football team manages not to win an evidently weaker opponent or when some scientific results prove to be predictably absurd. Thanks.

There is an old saying from Aesop, in Greek, of course, so the exact wording varies in English, "The mountain labored and brought forth a mouse." It is quite literary. Most people won't know it, I guess.
