It was hard not to be caught breathless

Hi there,

I saw this phrase in an article http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2011/jul/28/ho-chi-minh-trail-motorbike

"it was hard not to be caught breathless by its isolation and beauty in the twilight"
I know the phrase "catch breath" but "it was hard not to be caught breathless" is quite confusing.

I understand "not to be caught breathless" means " to be caught breath"

Can anyone please help?

Great thanks

” (World English Dictionary). ” So, here the viewers have their breath taken away when they look at the landscape, because the region looks amazingly beautiful and surprisingly isolated in the twilight. ’’It was hard not to be caught breathless’’ means that it was hard not to find the scene breathtaking and awesome, in other words, most people would have probably found it impressive.

Hello,

For ’’breathless’’ you find ’’(2) holding one’s breath or having it taken away by excitement, etc.” (World English Dictionary).
