To pursue and successfully capture: Dogs ran the fox to earth. The police ran the terrorists to ground.

The expression is older than message boards, Clive. It means to find find the start (source) of something. A thread is like a string or a rope. Imagine a long thread and you want to find out where it starts. You could pick it up and follow it (run it) until you found its starting point.

You could think of a thread in this sense as a series of related and connected pieces of information which finally led the searchers to Bin Laden.
