It was beginning to rain

Regarding the two sentences below:

(A) It began to rain when I arrived at the hotel.

(B) It was beginning to rain when I arrived at the hotel.

I'm pretty certain that there's no problem with (A), but I'm not sure about (B). What do you think about it? Does it sound natural? If so, what's the difference between these two sentences?

(B) is fine. There is not a big difference in meaning. Arguably, the onset of rain seems more gradual in (B), and may have started slightly earlier.
