It was all he could do and ....

Hi

One man saved someone's life.

The very next day, when that man was sitting in a restaurant, a journalist came up to him and wanted to interview him about what he did the night before (saved someone's life). However the guy didn't want to give any interviews becasue police was after him and he was afraid.

The journalist said to that guy: I'm Charlie Trimble. I run the Divine Eagle, the local newspaper.

Then the narrator in a book said: It was all Stone could do not to leap up and run out of the place.

It's a simple sentence but somehow I'm not sure I get the meaning of it.

I would say it means: He couldn't do anyhting to leap up and run out of the place, but I'm not sure if this is what it means.
