it vs them

I can't remember properly if I was ever taught to use the word' it' when talking about objects instead of 'them' but I have always used it all my life but nowadays I'm getting confused. it seems like the plural of it even when talking about objects is them. Which is right? shouldn't we use it when there are many objects instead of them?
