It / the ankle was bleeding

Can I say,

It was started to rain. They ran quickly to their home. John hurt his ankle while he was running. It was bleeding / His ankle was bleeding.

Top answer

They quickly ran home, rather than "to their home," sounds more natural to me. Usually if you hurt your ankle while you are running, you twist it, or maybe sprain it. The injury is internal.
