1. Was that a bit of a gaffe then, starting to eat before everyone else had been served?



Shouldn't prepartory "it" be used in this sentence to represent the gerund at the end?



I am a little bit of confused because only "it" can be prepartory, whereas both 'this' and 'that' cannot.
