It so happens

Hello.

I wonder why when we say "It so happens that.." we mean that we talk about event which might occur before to cause events happening now. Example: "It so happens that I'm a doctor". Then how to use "It so happened"?

Thanks. Do you mean that we can only use "It so happens"? And can't we say it in the past? "It so happened"
