Hi everyone, which of the following sentences is correct:

Before you start any of the exercises, examine them closely.

or

Before you start any of the exercises, examine it closely.

Most native speakers tend to use a plural verb after any of [plural noun], so I don’t think it deserves a thumbs down. On second thought, however, I’d say the singular verb would be OK formally, though odd sounding.

How about,
"Before you start any of the exercises, examine each one carefully..." - the thing is i think this still has the suggestion that before you start each exercise you should examine all the other exercises, does it? I'm not sure. Basically what i mean is, "Before you start an exercise, of which there are many, examine the one you're about to start carefully."
