" it " or " that " ?

Hi there,

I'm wondering how to use " it " or " that ".
Especially when i was using the sentence of " I appreciate ..."

I appreciate it.
I appreciate that.

How to choose " it " or " that " with this sentence?
If someone can help and explain to me.
Thanks a lot.

Use "it" when there is no definite thing you are appreciating. I'd appreciate it if you would help me. Use "that" when it is clear what you are appreciating, and you want to emphasize it.
