it only ranked tenth in the contest.

Caria wrote a nice essay, but it only ranked tenth in the contest.

Do all of the above versions sound right? If not, how would you correct them? Thanks.

I prefer the middle one. Someone had to rank it, so although "it ranked tenth" is understandable, it leaves out that idea that someone else did it. Ranked means they were listed in order, so "ranked tenth" does the best together.

I prefer the middle one.

Someone had to rank it, so although "it ranked tenth" is understandable, it leaves out that idea that someone else did it.

Ranked means they were listed in order, so "ranked tenth" does the best together.

(On the other hand, maybe there were 1000 entries and 10th is great!)
