It looks / looked to had / have been

Hi,
Suppose that we are talking about a sentence which is not used these days:

1. It looks to had been fashionable in the past or ancient times.
2. It looked to had been fashionable in the past or ancient times.
3. It looks to have been fashionable in the past or ancient times.
4. It looked to have been fashionable in the past or ancient times.

Thank you

1 and 2 are definitely wrong.

3 sort of works, but I would prefer to say "seems to have been".

4 is not appropriate for describing a present situation.

Hi ozzourti .
How "have been" can agree with "ancient times"?

also, "past or ancient times" doesn't sound good to me.
isn't it better to say:
"in the past or even in the ancient times"

MIGHow "have been" can agree with "ancient times"?
Broadly speaking:

"to be" -- present
This seems to be the best solution available.

"to have been" -- past
The policy seems to have been abandoned in the second half of the last century.
MIGalso, "past or ancient times" doesn't sound good to m

MIGHow can"have been" can agree with "ancient times"?
It's the perfect infinitive, which can be used for past times.

He seems to have disappeared in 1917 - It seems that he has disappeared in 1917.

Hello Fivejedjon,
Thanks for answering. What's your opinion about the last one? I mean number 4.

Thank you.

If you're talking about something that is not fashionable now (which seems to be the case here) -- but used to be fashionable in the past/ancient times, then 4 doesn't really work (the entire sentence is set in the past). In fact, it seems to you (now) that it was fashionable in the past.
