It is unseemly at the best of times

Hi teachers,

Excerpts from Newsweek.

I own too many clothes. Let me be very clear - I'm not proud of such excess. It's unseemly at the best of times. During a recession, such indulgence i seven less forgivable - not to mention unsustainable.

> Could I ask why would the writer say "at the best of times" to refer a recession?

> What is "unsustainable" refer to?

Thank you.

The writer doesn't refer to the recession with at the best of times, quite the opposite: he thinks it a bad idea to have a lot of unnecessary clothes even when the times are good . "Such indulgence is unsustainable" means that having more clothes than one needs is a burden for natural resources. CB

Certainly. Some articles of clothing and footwear are made from non-natural substances, such as oil, for example. Also, anything made by machine in a factory is a burden on natural resources in that electricity is needed to produce the item. Very often the production of electricity requires things and methods that are harmful for the environment. Burning oil or coal to generate electricity produc
