it is the fifth of the most frequently visited sites

Myspace has become so popular that it is the fifth on the list of the most frequently visited sites on the Internet.

Hi,
Is "the" preceding "fifth" in the above optional or must it be deleted? And why? Thanks.

I'm not sure if "the" is actually wrong , but the sentence reads much better to me without it. I think the reason might be that the noun ("item", or similar) that is implied after "the fifth" does not actually appear in the sentence. " "I'm sick of visitors.

I think the reason might be that the noun ("item", or similar) that is implied after "the fifth" does not actually appear in the sentence. Compare the following, all of which sound OK to me with the word in brackets omitted: "Tonight's episode is the fifth (episode) in a ten-part series.",
