Which of the following sentences is right?

1) It was late in the evening when the accident happened at the corner of the street.

2) It was late in the evening that the accident happened at the corner of the street.(Is it right to say" Late in the evening, the accident happened at the corner of the street"?)

Hello, Qingqing, I do prefer your first sentence. You don't say "it was late... ) You can also say "the accident at the corner of the street happened late in the evening" (but it may slightly change the meaning), or "the accident happened at the corner of the street, late in the evening".

You can also say "the accident at the corner of the street happened late in the evening" (but it may slightly change the meaning), or "the accident happened at the corner of the street, late in the evening". I don't much like "late in the evening" at the beginning.

I agree that the first version is preferred, though I don't have a problem with 'late in the evening' upfront. Context would dictate the preferred placement of that phrase.

How to analyze the sentence? "when..." is an attributive clause or an adverbial one? "It" refers to time, right?

As to "The accident happened at the corner of the street late in the evening", can't we use "the Emphatic Pattern "?
