Grammar

it is or it's

Hi all,

I just recieved my assignment back with "it's" crossed out every time I used it and replaced with "it is". For example; It's significant that.... It's not clear in the scenario...... It's evident that....

And then this remark: It is, # its - posession of something. Am I going crazy? I won the unversity medal in my last degree and now I am doubting myself cause some Dr. is marking my essay.

Thanks for anyone who can clear this up before I go and complain and try and get a remark.

Cheers,

Jo

I'm not sure what happened, but these are correct: It's significant that.... It's not clear in the scenario...... It's evident that..

  • I'm not sure what happened, but these are correct: It's significant that....
  • It's not clear in the scenario......
  • It's evident that..
  • It's does indeed mean It is , but the contraction should not be used in formal writing like essays; it should read It is significant , etc.
  • Its is of course possessive: my sailboat lost its mast.
