Topic: It is more important for schoolchildren to learn about local history than world history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Imparting knowledge related to history in education systems from primary education to tertiary education is still under debate. There are several opinions believed that local history is more crucial than world history. However, I disagree with this view.
On the one hand, many benefits of studying local history are significant. Firstly, understanding thoroughly regional antiquity nurtures adoration and honour of students towards older generation in particular and their country in general. History of local land could remind younger generation about the duration of the devastating war and sacrifices of legion soldiers to achieve national independence for the life of themselves. Therefore, they feel a sense of responsibility to protect the peace of their nation and contribute to the development of their land. Secondly, the awareness about national history could stimulate tourism industry growth. The historical background is a component of the shaping original culture of their local areas. Hence, having a good command of local history, younger people who might have enough capacity to become delegates of local tourist, widely advertised typical culture of local lands with foreign people around the world.
On the other hand, I strongly believe that the pupil should be taught global history in parallel local history. In individual perspective, a huge advantage from this is removing obstacles in the path of integration with human culture. In the contemporary life, a growing number of people are going abroad to broaden their horizons, so if they figure out the history as well as the culture of there, to adapt themselves to new circumstance will be mitigated difficulty. For example, Mr Hoa, my younger sister, after enrolled a college of American in 2012, she quickly integrated into the environment, because of the harmony of cultures from many nations in her mind.
In conclusion, it seems to me that local history and world history are of equal importance and should be considered to balance on the syllabus.
