It is expected that

An explanation in GMAT says that "It is expected that……" is wordy. Can you tell me why?

If I say something beginning with "It is+adj+that…… ", such as "it is important that ……", is it wordy?

It's wordy because it can usually be replaced with fewer words.

It is expected that we will have more than a dozen guests this evening.

I think it is wordy because you don't need "that."

It is expected they will be late this evening.

You can also say this in fewer words, but I would argue that alternatives shouldn't be further mired in passive voice.

We expect them to be late.
I expect them to be late.
