it is enough to cover half.

Two questions about this comic page (Beethoven and his friend) :

1. About this page is written "Maelzel and Beethoven did finally make up, each paying half the legal expenses. " Does the first highlighted section mean "this is half of the legal expenses. But, it is enough. I will do anything to solve this fight between us"? Why they should each pay half of it? Is it regular that two persons share legal expense between them when they decide to solve the file between themselves?

2. What does "excellent!" mean here? Is it in response to that Beethoven accepts to have dinner with him or Beethoven has played a piece at his piano and the friend says "excellent" in response to it?
