It is about time

It is about time we did or It is about time we do.

I know the first construction to be grammatically correct. But I often come across sentences that follow the second one. Is that correct? Thanks

I would consider either one correct. It seems to me that many people prefer the first, but both are used quite often. CJ

In BrE the past tense is used. I wonder whether the same applies in AmE.
