Is it possible to say "it had been the first thing he said after we met" Instead of "it was the first thing he said" ?
It just doesnt sound right to me.
It may be possible if you are looking back to that time from a later time in the past. : I remembered his warning clearly. It had been the first thing he said after we met.

I remembered his warning clearly. It had been the first thing he said after we met.
There may be a question about whether other verbs should be past perfect too, but I would personally accept this sentence in the context.
