It had been the first thing he said after we met?

Is it possible to say "it had been the first thing he said after we met" Instead of "it was the first thing he said" ?

It just doesnt sound right to me.

It may be possible if you are looking back to that time from a later time in the past. : I remembered his warning clearly. It had been the first thing he said after we met.

  • There may be a question about whether other verbs should be past perfect too, but I would personally accept this sentence in the context.
