Please check whether both of the sentences below are correct. "2" is not needed.

Both are correct, but the use is different. (at least sometimes)

[1] It got me to think about my parents when I am tempted to do something really stupid. (This thinking occurs before the potential action and could prevent the action.)

[2] It got me thinking.about how I disappoint my parents when I do something really stupid. (This thinking is after (a) completed action(s).
