It doesn't give much deeperness

A dialogue between two men:

Man #1: Infiltrating a place like this is uneasy. It takes time, lots of time; that's why I came in so long ago, to give me time to go undercover.

Man #2: Well, it doesn't give much deeperness. (Man #1 smiles). Did you ever wonder why they sent you in?

What does man #2 mean with 'well, it doesn't give much deeperness'? (I suppose that here deeperness= depth)

Does he mean perhaps that it wouldn't have been required to make such an effort?
Why this sentence makes man #1 smile? Does it have a double meaning?

Context: None of them are spies. Man #1 believes he is a deep cover spy and tries to convince the other guy that he really is. Man #2 knows that man #1 is just an inmate of the lunatic asylum, so he goes with the flow.

Are you sure you heard this correctly? My guess is that the first man says "Infiltrating a place like this isn't easy. " "It doesn't give much deeperness" makes no sense at all.

Thanks, khoff. You are completely right.

I heard it again (the sound is quite bad) and what they really say is "isn't easy" and "Well, it doesn't get much deeper than this".

Nevertheless, I am still thinking about the meaning of the second sentence and the joke involved (if any). Can you help me again?

Man # 2 is saying, "Well, this is as deep as deep cover could possibly be."
