Does the highlighted section mean "although, of course, contemporary art is not as valuable and respectable as traditional art"?

Contemporary art, then, has become a recognised sign of cultural capital in the last twenty years or so (although, of course, it does not command the same level of reverence as historically validated ‘masterpieces’).

If I am not mistaken, the writer sees eveything in terms of its role in advertising. If you are making a TV ad, and you put up a picture of, say, Miro's Moonbird , it will stimulate some predictable reaction in the viewer, but not as strong or predictable or powerful as that engendered by a picture of, say, David .
