Is this usage of 'cotton on' correct?

I have just opened English Forums website, and it cottons on I haven't asked a question for a long while!

No, you can't use "cotton on" impersonally like that. It would have to be "I cotton on", but it still doesn't seem the best choice of expression for this context. You can say "... and I realise (that) I haven't asked ...", for instance.
