It Comes to the Same Thing

Hi. I have a somewhat idle question. Consider the following expressions:

When it comes to...

This comes down to...

It comes to the same thing...

The last two expressions have quite a similar meaning. However, in the third one, the word down is not used, which makes it look like the first one. Is there some explanation for this?

Thanks.

I doubt it. "Come" is one of the ancient words. It can be traced back to Indo-European in something like the same form. Such words get worked over pretty thoroughly over the millennia and acquire many nuances. It's fun to think about, but if anything is lost in the mists of time, it's this.
