Teachers, I posted about this yesterday and two teachers told me that 'it' is the preparatory it in this sentence, "It seems like everybody knows you." What I'm wondering about is if 'it' can refer to the 'like' clause. (it = like everybody knows you)
I understand it can refer to that clause, but am doubtful if it can refer to 'like' clause. Thanks!

I don't think it is a preparatory it. It is an existential it, as in 'it's raining'. It has no referent.
