Grammar

'It' before day of the week.

Hi teachers,

Which is the correct option?

a) Is Saturday going to be a holiday for Tom?

b) Is it Saturday going to be a holiday for Tom?

Even though for me 'a' is the right one, I still don't know why I can't use 'it' as in option 'b'.

Thanks in advance

A is correct. You can make B grammatical by adding "that is" after the Saturday. Is it Saturday that is going to be a holiday for Tom?

  • A is correct.
  • You can make B grammatical by adding "that is" after the Saturday.
  • Is it Saturday that is going to be a holiday for Tom?
  • I still prefer A.
  • The use of B suggests to me that there could be some other day (besides Saturday) that is going to be a holiday for Tom.

Is it Saturday that is going to be a holiday for Tom? Or perhaps is it Sunday?

I agree that A is correct, IMHO the correct form of B would be: "Is it saturday to be a holiday for Tom"
