Can I use "It appeared that..." in the meaning of "It turned out that..." or it can only mean "It seemed that..."?

I can't think of any situation in which "It appeared that ..." could mean "It turned out that ...".

For example:


It turned out that he was the perpetrator after all. = When all the evidence was in, the truth, it appeared: that he was the perpetrator after all.
