"It and that"

A : What is that?

B : That is a clock.
B : It is a clock.

Can I say either one for the same meaning? Or when can I use it, this and that? I think that so many times "it and that" or "it and this" are interchangeable. What do you think? Thank you so much as always and have a good and safe day.
