1. Hayden's wife cut up some of his musical scores to make hair curlers. This infuriated him, but he could do nothing about it.

Q) What does "it" in #1 refer to? Is it the same as "this" or talking about "this infuriated him?"

2. He took care of people who were poor and sick. I admire it.
3. At the end of the century the so-called genome theory underwent changes. It was due to the discovery of prions.

In my book, it says "Note that the use of it in #3 may be acceptable to some native speakers, even though this would be more appropriate."

Q2) Does it mean "it" in #2 is inappropriate? Is there a reason?
Q3) If there a slight difference between the use of it and that in #3, could you tell me please?
