The antecedent to it is "guitar".

Not the fact that the person spent time with the guitar?

No, the antecedent is the nearest noun preceding the pronoun that makes logical sense.

OK. One more thing.

This person says "this guitar", which I think means it's there, on the spot.

Do you think "still remember the guitar, which is before the person's eyes" works and makes sense?

I spent a lot of time with this guitar, and I still remember it.

My interpretation of the context is that the speaker has been talking about a particular guitar, and it is lost or otherwise gone. It is pure nostalgia.

I can't see how "before the person's eyes" fits the sentence.

So do you think "this" points to a particular guitar in the person's mind and doesn't imply physical proximity?

It could be either. The only way to tell is from the context. Most often, it is physical proximity.

I'm getting a bit confused, AS. You said:

it is lost or otherwise gone.
I can't see how "before the person's eyes" fits the sentence.

but now you say:

Most often, it is physical proximity.

I wonder what kind of situation this person could be in...

My interpretation of the context is that the speaker has been talking (musing, reminiscing) about a particular guitar, and it is lost or otherwise gone. It is pure nostalgia.

In my prior post, I was talking about the word "this" in general, not this particular sente

AH! It was a general statement.

So "this" in the sentence in question is a word which points to something in the speaker's mind, right
