Issues with tense? Help!

Please help me understand what isn't sitting right with me about the following sentences:

"A normal workout would consist of cardio and weights. We would do sprints in the hallway and then we would run laps around the track."

I prefer:

"A normal workout consisted of cardio and weights. We did sprints in the hallway and then ran laps around the track."

What is being done differently in the second example, and is one sentence more grammatically correct than the other?

Thanks!

All the sentences are correct and sound great. The difference is that the sentences with "would" call a little more attention to the repetition or habit of the activity.
